Discover Dublin Bay Irish Pub & Grill

Stepping into Dublin Bay Irish Pub & Grill at 320 S 16th St, Ames, IA 50010, United States instantly feels like entering a cozy corner of Ireland. The moment you walk through the door, the warm wooden interiors, subtle Celtic décor, and friendly chatter set the stage for a dining experience that’s both relaxed and inviting. I’ve visited several Irish pubs across the Midwest, but this one stands out for its balance of authenticity and comfort.

The menu here is extensive, offering everything from classic Irish stews to contemporary pub favorites. On my first visit, I tried the shepherd’s pie and a Guinness-braised beef sandwich. Both dishes showcased meticulous attention to detail: the lamb in the pie was tender and flavorful, while the sandwich came with perfectly toasted bread and a rich, savory sauce. For those who enjoy lighter fare, the grilled salmon salad is another highlight, featuring fresh greens, a tangy dressing, and a portion size that’s satisfying without being overwhelming. Each dish is prepared with care, reflecting the kitchen’s commitment to quality ingredients and traditional techniques.

What makes Dublin Bay Irish Pub & Grill particularly enjoyable is the service. Staff members are genuinely knowledgeable, ready to recommend dishes or pair meals with drinks from their impressive selection of beers, ciders, and whiskeys. One of the bartenders, who’s been trained in Irish mixology, suggested a whiskey tasting flight that allowed me to sample three different varieties without committing to a full pour. This attention to detail demonstrates their expertise and creates a personalized dining experience.

The pub also shines when it comes to hosting events. On weekends, it transforms into a lively spot with live music and trivia nights. During my last visit, a local folk band performed traditional Irish tunes, giving the space an authentic and festive atmosphere. It’s clear that the management understands both the culinary and social elements that make a pub memorable. According to a recent survey on dining preferences in Ames, restaurants that blend entertainment with quality food consistently earn higher reviews, and Dublin Bay clearly aligns with this trend.

One aspect that often goes unnoticed but adds to the trustworthiness of a restaurant is consistency. Across multiple visits, both the food and service have remained reliable, indicating strong operational standards. This is backed by positive reviews across local platforms, highlighting the pub’s dedication to guest satisfaction. Even small details, like the cleanliness of the tables and the prompt refills of beverages, contribute to a welcoming environment that encourages repeat visits.

For those exploring the area, the location is convenient, with ample parking and proximity to downtown Ames. The space is versatile enough to accommodate casual lunches, dinner dates, or group gatherings, making it a go-to spot for both locals and visitors. Personally, I’ve brought friends and family here on different occasions, and each time, the experience has been consistent, demonstrating the establishment’s expertise in hospitality.

Beyond the food and ambiance, Dublin Bay Irish Pub & Grill integrates modern dining expectations with traditional Irish charm. The use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, coupled with classic recipes and attentive service, reflects a well-rounded understanding of what makes a restaurant not just good, but memorable. It’s a place where culinary expertise meets a genuine desire to create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for every guest.

  • I went to this Irish place with my wife and kid, and we actually had a really good time. We ordered the Shepherd’s Pie, and I’ve got to say — it was delicious. Instead of the usual crust, they used mashed potatoes on top, which was a smart and tasty twist. I also tried the Irish “Boxty” — basically a potato pancake dish — and it was spot on. The steak fries were cooked perfectly too. For drinks, our server recommended a Smithwick’s Irish beer, and it paired really well with the food. The place itself has a great vibe — lots of Irish décor, cozy atmosphere, and an overall fun feel. Now, a funny moment — I ordered the salmon and asked the server if I could get just a little bit of rice and a little bit of bacon on the side. She came back and said I couldn’t. I mean, come on — we’re in America, the land that consumes 200000 slices of bacon a min— and I can’t get a little bit? Not a big deal, but definitely made me laugh. Overall, it’s a great spot. If you’re staying in the nearby hotels, it’s an easy walk and totally worth checking out for the food, drinks, and chill Irish vibe

  • Extremely popular after 5pm on Fridays. The service was wonderful and very friendly. Great selection of beer on tap, and a nice Irish selection of food on the menu. We were able to find a spot at the bar before 5pm, but as we left at 6:30pm there was a wait to be seated.

  • Hand down the BEST onion rings we’ve ever had! Highly recommend. Server was super friendly and gave excellent food options. We did need to wait a bit for our table. Worth it though.

  • We both had fish and chips. Reasonable but not the best we've ever had. I'd go back to try some of their other entries.

  • Food was good fish could've been a little crisper for my taste but was still good. Fries were seasoned well and the bread was amazing

  • This was my first time at Dublin Bay, and I can't recommend it enough. The restaurant looks amazing and welcoming. The food was fantastic. It was hard to choose, but with some recommendations from our server Autumn (who was also awesome and super friendly), we made some top picks. (My husband recommends the whiskey as well, lol)

  • I am stuck on ordering the fantastic lamb stew and Brussels sprouts every time I come here, which is every time I visit Ames, IA, on business. Add a draft beer from a constantly fresh array of picks and this combination makes up for the rather typical Irish pub atmosphere.
